nature awareness and outdoor play

playful learning about nature for all ages

This section is about deepening relationship, understanding and trust of the natural world so we can feel at home and care for the world we are part of.

Wholeland uses a huge range of games, activities and crafts that relate to and interweave the modern curricula of science, art, geography, biology, botany, CDT and even history. Why?
To develop a connection to nature with the heart, the head and the body.
What kinds of things could I learn about through nature awareness and outdoor play?
  • how to get wildlife to come to you
  • what the underside of mushrooms looks like
  • to trust senses and intuition
  • the smells of a woodland through the seasons
  • the language of birds
  • medicinal, edible and useful plants
  • trust, fears and wonders in nature
  • tracks and tracking
  • cycles and patterns in nature
  • why some plants flower in spring
  • how long it takes before the mice come out to play again after you've frightened them back into their holes!
  • how useful trees are for us, the soil, the water we drink, the animals that live in them...
  • the list is endless... and I am eager to share what I know about nature with you.

"we are what we see." David Abram
In England we have pretty much become a race of people who know more about what is on telly than what is growing outside our backdoors or singing in the nearest bush. At 18 years old, although I had a keen interest in all things natural as a child, I knew just a few of the native trees and I certainly didn't know much about the flowers and shrubs. Many teachers don't know the difference between a house sparrow and a hedge sparrow - two of the commonest birds in the country!
"you teach best what you most need to learn." Richard Bach
Over the last 15 years that has all changed for me. I have studied environmental science, herbal medicine and have been on a quest to find out about the uses of many of our wonderful native species of plant. I have a long way to go. And then there are the insects and birds...so many living things we share our lives with that I want to know more about. They all have a vital role in maintaining the world we share with them. And I would love to know what they all do and how they fit into the shimmering web of life. Maybe by the time I am a great grandfather I might know enough to be wise and write things like this old Chinese man!

'See the world as your self, have faith in the way things are. Love the world as your self; then you can care for all things.' Lao Tzu

For the time being though I have much enthusiasm and some knowledge to share about the Natural World we are part of. I love sharing nature through games and activities, and that is what Nature Awareness is about. Playful learning about nature.

If you want Wholeland to help you and your children or organisation get closer to nature just get in contact!
