environmental art
  .
As I see it Art is an expression of Creation, something welling up from inside someone and becoming manifest in the physical world. By creating art in a natural setting we have the possibility of co-creating something with nature in that moment. Levels of meaning associated with the work can be simple and complex, shallow and deep. What I do as an environmental artist is a blend of working with what is there in each season, bushcraft (making string, baskets, shelters, fires etc), landscape gardening  and being inspired by forms, patterns and sounds of the natural world we are part of. What I really wanted to do when doing A'levels was art, biology and geography. It wasn't possible at the school I was at. What I do now is a cross over of those subjects, with some science, music and spirit added to the mix!

I teach people of all ages to find their own expression in nature, using the resources that happen to be in the place where we are working. I like to think of it as a fun and playful way to get to know the qualities and textures of natural materials and how we interact with them. It a very intimate way of getting to know the natural world. During the process people will come to know the 'stuff ' they are using, learning more than if they were to only know its name. They will come to know how it feels, bends, sounds, smells, how it looks in sunlight, when it's wet, and maybe even how it rots away and changes with natural cycles.

At present it is mostly primary schools who employ my services, but here is a range  of the projects I have been involved with:
cycles and directions  earthday celebration enchanting nature garden design patterns in nature planet pathway songlines

a sculpture making activity that explores the cycles symbolism of the natural world in relation to the directions of N,S,E,W, Also referred to as the Medicine Wheel a community group in Tavistock got me in to lead a celebration honouring the web of life during their Earth Day 2002 using clay figures, maybe puppets, words, rhythms and found natural objects to unfold the imagination before becoming self-employed I was a garden designer and landscaper for an ecological gardening company. Do you want your garden or school grounds re-designed? exploring the patterns in nature with sculpture, words, sounds and rhythms a path made with the children at Chardstock Primary School as part of a re-landscaping of the school gardens inspired by the australian aboriginal word/song maps, this activity is about making songs/poems/raps to celebrate routes around the school grounds or local footpaths and finding hidden treasure!
If you want me to come and 'do some art', just get in contact!
How much does it cost? There is a sliding scale, depending on whether the group is large, small, a community group, a school or a corporation. For Schools, £180 for the day, £30 per hour, £60 minimum charge.
